Introduction / History

The Pambia are an ethnolinguistic people of northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, mainly in Bas-Uele Province. They speak the Pambia (Apambia) language, part of the Zande cluster, and share historical ties with neighboring Zande-speaking groups shaped by migration, trade, and colonial-era disruptions.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most Pambia live in rural villages, relying on subsistence farming, fishing, and small-scale trade. Families are extended and community-oriented, with elders guiding decisions. Celebrations center on harvests, marriages, and life milestones, marked by music and dance. Common foods include cassava, plantains, maize, vegetables, and river fish, prepared in stews and porridges typical of the region.

In eastern DRC, Christians face severe persecution amid violent conflict. The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) – religious extremists with ties to the Islamic State group – have deliberately targeted Christian communities through massacres, abductions and the destruction of churches. Survivors report atrocities that are intended to eradicate the Christian presence.

Those who turn to Christ from other beliefs endure social rejection, pressure to recant their faith, and exclusion from inheritance and community life. Refusal to perform traditional rites often results in intimidation.

What Are Their Beliefs?

There are few Pambia evangelicals, but many who identify as Christians. While the majority of Pambia identify as Christian, many retain traditional beliefs involving ancestors and spiritual forces, resulting in syncretistic practices. Access to Scripture and discipleship resources in their heart language remains limited.

What Are Their Needs?

The Pambia face challenges from poverty, limited healthcare, and restricted educational access. Many communities lack clean water, adequate nutrition, and stable livelihoods. Spiritually, believers often need deeper biblical grounding and leadership development to strengthen local churches and witness. The Pambia need spiritual renewal and commitment to biblical faith.

Prayer Items

Pray for physical provision, healing, and sustainable development. Please pray for a faithful translation and wide distribution of the Scriptures, evangelism materials, and discipleship resources in the Pambia language. Pray that the Pambia Christians would lead their communities for God's glory, preach the Gospel, teach the Bible, plant churches, and make disciples of their own nation and beyond.
